For the least amount of hassle go with the GW 2.2. But also consider the supporting parts as well. The TB, the engine harness and injectors should all be considered as well. So many times I see conversions done and all the monkeys do is put the replacement engine and it still runs like crap. A used Subaru engine will need the same attention as well. Unless you like to tinker, stay stock but do a thorough job. I speak from experience. I have both a properly built WBX and a Subaru 2.2, my Subaru has been towed home from common Subaru issues. I’ve limped my WBX home. Engine swaps are not a panacea, they’re just a different engine. The newest conversion you’re going to get is a SAH but you’re in the 20K range there and then you need to regear your trans. I have put 250k on my WBX and 25K on my Subaru and about 1K on a 1,8T and I think the VW engineered WBX is the best engine going, don’t even get me going on Diesels.
