I did mine a few months ago. I used Dynamat Hoodliner (Dynamat Hoodliner Stop Road Noise! at Crutchfield <https://www.crutchfield.com/p_15411905/Dynamat-Hoodliner.html>). It was a mess to get the old stuff out but in the end it turned out pretty well. Here's a photo: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/2135709.jpg. My engine cover had to be raised slightly to make room for a conversion engine, so your results may vary.
