He also noted that there was a leak in exhaust system, which he discovered by the rag over the tailpipe method; he also spoke of possible funky spark plugs.  Perhaps dealing with those two areas might negate the need for the ballast resistor.  But yes, I found his whole approach interesting.

It seems to me though that the fix, adding a ballast resistor to limit current on the primary side of the coil, is a band-aid and does not address the real problem, whatever it might be.
