A brief update on the starter and closure.

Thanks, Dennis, for the suggestion of buying the Premier Gear starter (link below). Nice price, direct fit, works well. Now a really peppy start! I did diagnose that I had 12V from battery and on the ignition circuit, so the problem was definitely the starter/solenoid.

The removal and install, done in driveway without lift, went well. Removed air filter box and throttle body to get at some items from above, then did most of the work from below. Removing the old copper bushing was a challenge; used a 12x1.5 tap to back it out but was not sure that was the correct approach.

Back on the road!

It could be the resistance of the solenoid circuit is too high for the solenoid to get the gear out and close the contacts for the motor. This is a very common Bosch failure. Again, for under $100 make the uncertainty disappear. >> >> Dennis >> >> >> -----Original Message----- >> From: Vanagon Mailing List <vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com> On Behalf Of Douglas Toomey >> Sent: Tuesday, July 6, 2021 5:01 PM >> To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM >> Subject: Starter question >> >> All, >> >> The van developed a starting problem over the past couple of days.
