Hello John, I ran into similar problem when I had the AT on my '84 Vanagon rebuilt. Ā Rebuild wasn't done at my favorite AT shop as van had to be towed to mechanic that pulled the transmission. Ā When transmission didn't shift right, I took it to shop I trusted and had fluid changed, etc., for a nominal amount.
