If you take the heater box out you must take the cables loose and that
means readjust them to go in exactly as they came out. If you don't mark
them precisely, this becomes a time-consuming hit-or-miss process. If you
do it wrong on the slider end of the cable or make things too stiff on the
heater box end of the cable, the cable will fold/double and then you can't
do anything with it. A look under the dash at the slider end of things will
tell you what you need to know about bending the cable. I think you can
inspect it by removing the instrument cluster, but if not you can pull the
faceplate off the dash and see what is going on with the cables.
