VDO gauges
Now remember my engine is quite old. I get 70 or so pounds oil pressure at start. I barely pass the press test when engine hot.
That being said. On this trip my oil temps, mostly, stayed below 100C even during some steep climbs in first and g gear. At those time rad fan low speed was on.
My oil press was about or above 30 psi during climbs. At idle after such a climb, rad fan still on, oil pressure was between 15-20 psi.
There was one climb, first night , that I couldn’t climb in first, had to be g gear. Had a bit of a ditch across it too, so slow ease in and out. Normally, when I do that kind of climb, oil temps really go up. And pressure down. But this time it was fine. I’m going to attribute this to cooler ambient. 20C instead of 30C temps. But , again a but, I have the gut feeling the engine was running cooler. The only thing I really did to engine this summer when engine out, that could possibly be a reason, was getting all of my chronic exhaust leaks fixed.
Ok, back to the Hwy. Bruce, I can’t recall the temps and pressures you recorded on road from cowichan village to Duncan. I was flat out, 100-110 kph. At that sustained speed the oil temp just nudged over 100. Maybe 105. Oil pressure at that speed was 30 psi. As expected oil temps dropped to under 100C when I was forced to slow down to 80kph .

I’ll say more later, but I don’t think van has ran this well for quite a while. Ambient temps were cool, but still, I think my oil temps were lower by 5-10C and coolant temps were good…. Low speed fan came on when needed, temp dropped on long declines… etc etc. All good.
