Great story, Dan! I had a similar incident in Tennessee; was on a roadtrip. They lifted Vanagon....but lifting point they used was on outside body. Created a "crunch" in metal. One of these days, I will use channel lock pliers or something to reverse damage, and then some matching spot paint to conceal. On the other hand, every time I see this damage, I am happily reminded of my trip.

On my first vanagon, one time I brought it to a tire shop for a new set of
new tires, they jack the rear up using one floor jack on the engine ! ! !...
I almost fainted and yelled at them... the guy said it's safe, he's doing
it all the time and pointed at an American car with rear up on one floor
jack at the rear axle...... I went inside and talked to the manager and
then they raised the van with 4 floor jacks - 2 on the rear and 2 on the
front...
phew.... :-)
