Garmin backup cameras will require a Garmin GPS device, you would not be able to use one with an iPad.

I have a Garmin DriveSmart 51 with backup camera in my Vanagon, it works quite well. The backup camera is wireless and mounts to the license plate frame. It taps into one of the backup light wires for power and when it gets power the backup image shows on the GPS.

In addition to normal GPS features the DriveSmart 51 has some other neat features such as handsfree for cell phone, a forward facing dashcam that records onto a micro SD card and some alert features that sound warnings for lane departures and braking.

I don't think the 51 model is still available from Garmin but there is a newer model available. You might find the older one at discount outlet somewhere (the backup camera was optional with the 51).
