I have 195R14 all weather tires. I stopped in at a tire store to buy snow
chains. So I took the chains home, and proceeded to practice fitting them
for the time when I would need them. They were too small. I went back to
the shop, told the clerk that they were too small. He consulted his
computer, and said, that, no, they were correct. I pointed out again that
the tires were 195R14, not 185 as listed for stock. He argued with me,
insisting that the chains had to be correct, because his computer said so.
I invited him to fit them to the tires. He said, "why sure." He then
found that they would not fit, but still argued that something must be
wrong, maybe the chains were mispackaged, and he'd get me another set. He
brought out another set clearly marked for 185s, as were the ones he sold
me to begin with, but I hadn't really noticed, because the print was small
on the package. Besides, why would I expect Les Schwaab to sell me the
wrong sized chains when I had told the clerk what sized tires they were for?
I got a supervisor, who straightened things out so far as the chains were
concerned. I have no idea what he said to the clerk after I left.
