They came out ahead on that I am sure. When my first dauphine—purchased
from a friend’s family who was moving out of state for less than a
dollar—inevitably cracked a block, my dad brazes it up and I kept driving
it. If I could find a running one today I might buy it but alas they were
not made to be survivors. When it ran it was an appealing little city car
of which I have owned a total of four. One had the engine and transmission
fall out in the road, held captive more or less by the rear of the car. My
friend and I wrangled the engine on to the puny jack and went to the door
of the closest house to beg the coat hangers with which we would tie the
drive train back in and drive on.
