Hi Vanagon Types

I thought I would share a lesson that might be useful for someone else.

This past spring, I rebuilt the trailing arms and rear brakes on my '85 Westy. At the same time, I installed stainless brake lines. I had two issues afterwards: the drums were rubbing on the backing plate and a recurring noise when making a sharp turn. I assumed they were related. I fixed the first by removing a bit of metal from the rim of the drum, but the other noise continued. I kept looking at the trailing arm for the cause. Finally, when inspecting under the van, I found the front brake lines were rubbing on the wheel during a turn and were showing signs of wear.

I bought the lines from GoWesty, and while they describe them as for 80 to 91 vans, they also say they need some fitting to work with 80-85. Apparently, I missed that. I used zip ties to pull the line away from the wheel, but I do not like that as a long-term solution. I also wrapped some duct tape around the line where it is near the wheel, not to fix the line but to make it easier to see if there is any rubbing in the future. I am now shopping for the correct lines for the front brakes of my '85.

I guess the lesson is to read the fine print, and to keep inspecting after making a change or installing a new item.
