Great advice, Jim. So many things can be fixed. And if you want it fixed,
chances are you'll have to fix it yourself, because there are few people in
the business of fixing, any more, unless it is high dollar fixes. At one
time there were people who worked as "handymen," and "tinkerers." Some of
these folks worked routes. Seamstresses (seamsters?) took in clothing to
be mended. Shoe repair shops still exist, but many of the shoes now are
not repairable. Hiking boots, for example, have glued on soles that though
replacement soles are sold, glue won't hold because the inner soles can't
be properly cleaned. Stitched down and Goodyear welt soles are vanishingly
rare, restricted to a very few brands.
And some things, the replacement parts are of such poor quality that fixing
won't last. Even my 50 yo Hoover vaccuum cleaner had to be ditched,
because the only dust bags available are so thin they split when the vacuum
is turned on. They force us to buy new one way or another.
And don't get me started on cell phones. Batteries cannot be replaced in
almost all newer models!
But yes, we all should be fixing when we can. And sorry for the rant, not
appropriate anyway because it's not Friday. I apologize again.
