Hi Dan.

The model year, type, of Vanagon may be a factor. If connected the cig socket to an aux battery isn't an option.....

Connect it to the X circuit controlled by the load reduction relay? That said, a few thoughts:

- will potential added Amps via load(s) on cig lighter socket be too much for the X circuit ? - will added current through the ignition switch cause it to wear out sooner ? - when key is turned to operate the starter motor, the X circuit is disabled.
