Subject: Ground Wire For Camper Light Mystery
Content-Type: text/html; charset="us-ascii"

Does anybody know how the factory default ground wire / grounding location is from the camper light in the back of late (grey) vans?

The reason I ask is because a few weeks ago I noticed that in a 91 I have here that the rear camper light wouldn't go on unless I touched a wire (probably an unterminated brown wire) under the dashboard to a grounding point on the chassis. This was about five months ago but I am having trouble finding under the dashboard that wire.

Now I can't get the light to turn on at all.

I looked in the wiring diagrams and the "Camper Electrical Equipment" page(es) refer to a camper light in the back being terminated at terminal 31 of the "Front Interior Light". I see that there are two ground wires connected to terminal 31 of the only "Front Interior Light" in this van. One of these two brown 0.5 wires probably terminate at the chassis ground tree under the dashboard, then the other of these two brown ground wires presumably goes to the fancy grey light in the back of the van as it says in the manual. But what is strange is that I cannot measure any continuity between the ground pins of the light in the back and either of the brown 0.5 size wires at the front interior light.

All I can guess is that somehow the 0.5 brown wire to the light in the back has burned out somehow but I really cannot believe how this could happen. I switched that light to use LEDs which presumably use a lot less current than the original incandescent.

It is besides the point but really, I cannot believe that the factory would bother to ground that light under the front dashboard anyway since it makes no sense (to me) for them to have done so. I would have grounded that light to chassis behind the refrigerator or up near the light itself.

I have no other recourse now that I can take of but to take the woodwork apart above the rear camper light and ground it to the chassis back there someplace.

<x-sigsep>
</x-sigsep> ____________________________
Derek Drew
Sharon CT
derekdrew@derekmail.com
Email is best normally but...
Mobile: 703-408-1532 (voice and texts)
