I just noticed nobody answered that question “why isn’t the ignition circuit fused?”, so I’ll take a shot at it.

Because if it was fused, a burned fuse would prevent the engine from starting. It follows the logic that you would be better off being at least part way to where you’d need to be to get the fire damage fixed.
