So we finally left Friday afternoon for the trip back to Long Island. As we left it was a beautiful sunny day with temps above 80. As luck would have it turn on the AC almost nothing. So drove with windows open. Driving north in the afternoon means sun on drivers side so it was like driving in a green house until nightfall. The weather was actually nice and warm until mid-way through North Carolina. The AC was last charged in July so I guess I need to find the leak(s).

TPMS observations. Tire pressures were set in New York before leaving. Running true winter tires pressures were set at 42 psi front and 48 psi rear. Traveling at 70-75 during the early afternoon the rears made it to over 57 psi and temp on the sensors reached 112F. Modified the alarm set point to silence them. I'm using internally mounted sensors and the reader-app is running on the Android Media center recently installed.

Transmission ATF temp never went above 210F. In the colder weather 140F. Engine oil temp and pressure during the warmer Florida weather almost went to 210F and pressure stayed between 45-50psi at highway speed, 20 psi at idle. As the weather cooled up north back to 180F or even 160F and pressure stayed above 50psi highway. Note except for rings and heads this engine is original. It does also have the GoWesty HD oil pump. After 2 Florida trips and a few weeks daily driver use oil has not been added despite the flywheel seal drip.

Otherwise the trip went well and the Red Van just passed 290K. Price of gas adding to the cost of this trip. At the truck stops Diesel was consistently $.70 to $.90 per gallon more. At 2 stations the difference was $.98. Still fuel and tolls for the round trip and fuel traveling while down there is pushing $600. As my available time off is limited flying and a rental car may soon make sense again.

For the important stuff on this trip there is the Vanagon count. We only 4 the entire time. We did see a really nice looking yellow air cooled camper in Melbourne!

Dennis
