The answer is that temp gauge led is first and foremost an "over temperature warning" led. The coolant level warning aspect was added on later as a secondary function of the same led.
Also the coolant gauge temp sender is absolutely NOT the Temp 1 sensor. The Temp 1 sensor is in the AFM to tell the ECU the intake air temp.
