Back in the 1970s I lived in Tulsa, where I taught at the local jr college, and commuted to Stillwater, 70 miles away for graduate school. One winter there was an incident a 100 miles or so east in Missouri where a highway policeman made a traffic stop and a hitchhiker raised up from the back seat and shot the officer dead.

I got stopped late one evening for speeding on the way home from Stillwater. I usually drive with my wallet in the storage locker between the front passenger seats. When the policeman asked me for my DL, I had already thought about this. I told him where my wallet was and he immediately shined a flashlight into my face and the space inside the car. He told me to open that compartment very slowly, which I did. He was almost shaking when he appeared at the window, and I really was fearful of what might happen.
