Well,

I’m starting to get into this project and luckily I first got my fingers on the grommet where the small line off the filler pipe goes into the tank. It feels strong tight and newish.. A pleasant surprise. I’m wondering if only the evaporation tanks will need attention.

I’m going to try to feel up in there more but I didn’t at first see how to get my hand in there. But, there must be a way if Dennis has changed grommets without dropping the tank.

Fingers crossed I get off easy.

Unfortunately parts design and quality effect this in addition to environmental conditions. With some efforts the grommets on top of the tank can be replaced tank in place. The filler pipe grommet is also a place of failure and that can be bad. I've also learned that the gauge sender needs to be tested for sealing before installing the tank. Bad tank quality sometimes makes this seal not work. On my 91 the sender is epoxied in place. > > > Dennis > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Vanagon Mailing List <vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com> On Behalf Of Eric Caron > Sent: Saturday, May 14, 2022 11:34 AM > To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > Subject: Gas tank reseal, how often? > > Hi folks, > > How often do we need to reseal the gas tank? > > I’m going to do the evaporation tanks soon and also replace a hose that is leaking between the tank and pump. > > If I’m doing that I almost wonder if it is time to just drop the tank and do the reseal? > I think it was last done in 2010. > > So 12 years ago. > This is for the 84 Westfalia > > I need to read the relevant history again but I believe this is also a replacement gas tank put in in 2010. > > Would this require the full kit with cross bar or hose or just the grommets? > > Any recommendation on which kit to use?
