Strange things done beneath the sun.
i had horn ring problems once. Bought a new ring - official VW part
number. Wheel of, replaced ring, steering wheel would not seat. Worked and
worked with it. Still no go. my final solution? I took the new brass
contact ring off the new plastic ring it was mounted to and put it on the
old plastic ring. Wheel seated properly. Used a touch of dielectric
grease in the brass fingers and the horn worked perfectly.
I have found that parts sometimes will have ever so slight variations in
them and they have to be modified to fit. I think part manufacture gets
farmed out to different sources and because of it errors creep in.
Did your horn not work at all before starting the ring replacement? If the
horn DID NOT work check the wiring connections at the horn itself. Try
this. Inspect the horn operating pad and be sure one of the springs is not
extended to far, cocking the pad slightly making the horn blow continually.
Inspect you horn ring installation again (I'm sure by now you have). it
never hurts. Might see something you missed. Adjust the brass fingers so
they DON'T make contact, Turn on ignition and see what happens. You can
always bend them back. Hopefully in there somewhere you find a solution.
