Subject: Sorting out mechanical issues 85
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8

Hi friends,

I’m trying to sort out several mechanical issues with my 85.

Eventually I’ll post a trip report but first want to focus on getting the van running well again.

I’m trying to address the things I can then find support for the things I need help with.

The canister for the vapor system is something I can fix once I get the correct canister. This should resolve the vacuum in the gas tank that could have led to tank failure.

I’m now trying to figure out why my fuel pump sounds wrong to me.

It sounds slurpee as if there is air in the line or gaps in the fuel.

I changed the gas filter and the slurpee sound went away. But the pump still sounded like it was struggling.

I changed the fuel pump with a Bosh that came with my 84. New. And that sounds the same. Still sounds like it is struggling to get fuel.

I pinched the fuel line gently from tank and pump sound changes. But as I pinch the line I feel something going through the line like particles. Or maybe air bubbles but the flow is not consistent from the gas tank. In comparison my 84 pump sounds smooth and consistent. That is how I remember the fuel pump sounding in the past.

I’m planning to try to blow back with air compressor to see if that even temporarily changes the sound.

Not sure if old filter or pump has particles as can’t see but will check if someone shows up in the future to look at them.

I’ll report back after the attempt to see if screen is clogged in the outlet.

Any tips or advice welcome.

If particles present and they made their way into my fuel system it may help explain other more serious engine issues.
