I seem to have done the same thing. The 91' Carat I bought into which with
the help of a lot of folks on this list, I put in a Subaru conversion, has
turned out to be a white elephant. As always there's going to be a few
things, but once I started digging, this thing turned out to be a near
basket case. Aside from the engine, with some excellent help from friend
Matt Yester on this list, I had the front end completely rebuilt. Bearings,
bushings, rotors, brakes, new power steering rack, tie rod ends, new
shocks, front end alighment, you name it. In addition the front doors were
rebuilt with new window operator motors, plus window operators themselves.
New electric door locks. Fortunately once the front locks were replaced all
the other locks in the system worked. All new felts and scrapers for the
front windows. The list goes on. Sounds like a downer, but there are
pluses. One thing, I'm going to know this van inside out when done. And
fortunately when Uncle Joel Walker parted ways with this list, I inherited
most of his cache of new and used parts, which was huge. Most of the used
stuff is gone. Maybe a couple of pieces left, but the new parts I have
reserved for my van. It has saved my bacon. I've only got some labor into
all this. Most parts needed I had, and they were new. Still some things to
do. Got to drop the fuel tank and replace the crossover pipe. New carrier
bearings go into the transmission next Tuesday. It's been an experience,
but I'm happy with knowing my van so thoroughly. The one thing I'm not so
happy about is that I have ro replace the front motor for heat and air,
and we all know where that is. Once before, BTDT, So I am at least
familiar. But I DREAd it none the less. But guess what. Even with all this,
I am enjoying the heck out of driving my Subaru POWERED vANAGON.
