Dennis, thanks for getting back to me on this issue. I still have not figured it out. I fully understand what you're saying, however if this is what’s happening would not the light blink rather than come on steady ? I now think the level sensor in the Eurovan tank I’m using is faulty. I’ve ordered a new tank and will try that. If I connect the two leads to the sensor the light blinks as it should. I don’t understand what makes the light come on steady, no blinking !

Frank

The coolant could be getting pulled down. Turning off the engine will allow the coolant burp back up when the pump stops making things look OK. > > There are a number of reasons VW chose the have the fully pressurized coolant system on the Vanagon with the overflow or recovery tank on the other side of the pressure cap. The single tank system does not have as much capacity for expansion and as there is always some air space it takes some time for the system to pressurize after start up. The coolant being under pressure is important for cooling parts of the engine that can quickly get hot such as the tops of the cylinders. The pressure maintains contact and prevents localized vaporization which also causes cylinder and head stud cavitation erosion. Not as much and issue for the cast iron motors. > > Dennis > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Vanagon Mailing List <vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com> On Behalf Of FRANK CONDELLI > Sent: Thursday, September 22, 2022 8:54 AM > To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > Subject: Re: Coolant light mystery > > Ed, I have not resolved this problem and you may have the answer. I have a newly installed 2l in-line 4 VW engine and using a coolant tank from a Eurovan which has the level sensor incorporated in the tank. For the first few hundred miles there was no problem then all of a sudden this coolant light problem came up. I will order in a new tank and try that to resolve this problem. > >> On Sep 22, 2022, at 12:00 AM, Automatic digest processor <LISTSERV@GERRY.VANAGON.COM> wrote: >> >> Frank, I don't know if you have sorted this out yet but my '86 Westi
