Subject: Running issue improvement
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8

Hi folks,

I’ve been working with friends to improve a running issue on my new to me 84 Westfalia.

After several attempts with friends we had made some improvements but the over all issue was still there.

Mainly a loss of power at acceleration from a stop. Sometimes a long hesitation. And sometimes a similar feeling when changing gears or driving at a higher speed.

I finally got a chance to have a local but hard to get to see VW mechanic to look at the van.

He returned it to me running much better. I notice so far no hesitations and the van seems to not be running rich. He did leave off the O2 sensor so I’m running with that off for now.

What did he do?

He found the AFM screw was turned fully closed and he opened it to a better position. He then adjusted the throttle valve. This is a new AFM from GW installed by a Florida mechanic that I believe had very questionable work ethics and skills. He found a small vacuum leak on the idle air valve fixed by tightening a clamp. He replaced the fuel pump, not part of the running fix. Just replaced as mine was not holding pressure for more then 30 minutes.

Checked fuel pressure, other wires, and injectors but all were good. Spark plugs were clean after he ran the van for about 40 miles of test driving.

Fingers crossed the van feels this good as we put on some test drive miles.

First small trip was great 84 currently feels more responsive and has less hesitations then my 85.

Hoping to fix 85 in future with engine management software update.
