Wife and I were in New Mexico camping along the Pecos river (where OlRvrRat had sent us). We needed wood.  On our travels around the area, we came upon a small wood for sale sign.  We drove down the dirt driveway.  An older Native American guy come out. They had some beautiful wood with a purple center, some kind of cedar I believe.  While chopping up some wood for us, he told me about just getting cancer (and other things) and using traditional medicine to fix it.  I jumped up, told him he shouldn't be sledge chopping wood and I should do it.  He may have been giving me the standard tourist rap, even though I was in an older vehicle.  Well, we so impressed him with our worry about him overdoing, and our general friendliest demeanor, that we had a delightful conversation and he even called out his wife, who were scandalously from different tribe and even let us take a picture of the both of them.We got a lot of wood for the money we paid.  Including generous tip.  It pays to be nice to people.  And easy and inexpensive to do. Dave B,the Boston oneHoping you share this one

Another tip:  when needing campfire wood, seek out a small construction project nearby.  They always have a pile of nice cutoffs.  In general, they are glad to have somebody take it away.  Be polite and humble and show respect....and you will drive away with a Vanload of wood....for free.
