Hi Jamie - I always start with a circuit testing light to see whether the socket is working or not before replacing a bulb. If the test light is properly grounded but not illuminating, then I scrape / scratch the contacts of the socket to see if corrosion is the problem. Often you'll get a flash or the tester will illuminate and then stop. At the same time I also see if gently pulling or moving the wiring attached to the socket makes a difference with the circuit. If there is no illumination then I'm checking the grounds. You can also ground the socket with an alligator clip to see if that helps at all to see if it is a grounding problem.

Another issue could be the wire terminals are corroded or broken - look at the ends where the terminals attach - see if there is power coming to the terminal using the circuit tester.
