Funny thing and a little against the grain - I had an accident about three years ago in my 2006 Mazda Station Wagon which I purchased from a used car lot for $3,500 including taxes in 2018. The car was T-boned on the passenger side front about 100 metres from my home - a car ran a stop sign as I was on my way home from work. The car was written off.

The Mazda had about 220,000 kms on it and was in great shape overall, very clean but did have some rust coming in if you looked close enough. Anyway I was prepared to accept what the buying price was and was a bit annoyed at the situation given I bought the car below market value. Anyway the insurance company here - ICBC offered me $7,600 and wanted to know if that seemed reasonable? I tried to hide my enthusiasm when signing the release. Certainly there were other comparable Mazdas but $7,600 was definitely the high end of the range. Anyway I bought a similar vehicle - a 2006 Audi A4 Avant (wagon) a few months later for $3,900 which is a great car too and also a steal.

I think the insurance company here wanted to make a quick and clean offer to close the file and didn’t want to get bogged down into timely negotiations for small sums of money. It would be different for a Vanagon but I do recall after having a rear bumper looked at by ICBC (Vanagon rear ended) the technician who inspected the damage was telling me how much value these vans were worth and was asking me about it from a personal point of interest.
