Dan, I concur. Plenty of evidence in my life, whether motorcycles or Vanagon, is that new gaskets on Throttle Body make a huge difference. Everything you said is true. Magically, new gaskets solve. Cheap too.

There's a gasket behind the throttle body... when it fails the engine has
the *"not running right"* symptom too, quite similar to the vanagon
syndrome... It's very easy to replace.
That bad gasket allows more air in and makes the fuel/air ratio wrong, the
AFM itself can't not correct it.
