Hello Raimund :-D I would not go to get old drivetrain from another car. As you wrote, it's a closed system. Finally you will be unable to adapt vehicle settings to the Vanagon body. You require an open system on which you can set your own parameters as you like. There are some garages around offering electric conversions for used cumbustion cars. Take a look over there which components thry are using from free market. Sure, there are some backdraws, but at final end I guess you will get that car back on street more easily.
