Thank you Chris,

I just sent you the same question privately but so appreciate you responding on list.

Tomorrow I’ll try to figure out the bevel you are describing and see what direction they are facing.

Nice to know I might not have to remove all four joints.

I’m looking forward to getting and installing the boots you sell on my 85. Appreciatively,

Eric Caron

I haven't found anything about the outer CV housing that delineates the need for one direction or the other. In my opinion, the most important factors are that the beveled side of the inner cage is facing the axle shaft and that the raised lip on the inner star is facing the axle (less important than the bevel on the star, but worth doing if possible). > > Thanks, > Christopher > t3technique.com > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Vanagon Mailing List <vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com> On Behalf Of Eric Caron > Sent: Monday, July 17, 2023 6:11 PM > To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > Subject: Re: CV joint question and success! > > OH boy, > > So, > > I just watched a video on CV boot rebuild and replacement and he says that groove goes on the outside toward wheel and or transmission. > > That would mean The one I just fixed is backwards and need to be changed. I ask because on the axles I removed from my 84 and am now repairing three CV joints have the groove facing in and one has it facing out. I’m wondering if that one was put on backwards. It has a good boot so I’d rather not mess with it. But if backwards I can deal with it now that I’m in the middle of this project. >> >> And Success. >> >> Thanks to the list and some local friends on the phone I successfully changed out a ripped boot and have an axle ready to go for my 84 if needed in the future. >> >> I’ll rehab the other axle now and then do the 85. >> >> Nice to have accomplished this task. Likely easy for you folks but I was feeling pretty uncertain taking it on alone. >> >> So, what direction for that CV joint groove? >> >> Eric Caron >> 85 auto 84 standard. >
