Thanks,

A little practice and knowing what I’m looking for and exactly where should do the trick.

Bottom line is, if the CV is original the ring around the outside should tell the story and that goes out toward wheel or trans. But, as CV can be reused. Nice to do a double check.

It will be a quick drop on one side and a slide to a small drop on the other. Go bac and forth. A few times until you have it. I haven't found anything about the outer CV housing that delineates the need for one direction or the other. In my opinion, the most important factors are that the beveled side of the inner cage is facing the axle shaft and that the raised lip on the inner star is facing the axle (less important than the bevel on the star, but worth doing if possible). > > > > On Jul 18, 2023, at 2:00 PM, Bruce Todd <beeceetee@gmail.com <mailto:beeceetee@gmail.com>> wrote: > > > > FYI - I have a CV joint from a 77 bus as a paper weight on my work desk - and there is no raised lip on the inner star - just saying. > > > > BT > > > > On Tue, Jul 18, 2023 at 10:35 AM Eric Caron <ericcaron96@comcast.net <mailto:ericcaron96@comcast.net> <mailto:ericcaron96@comcast.net>> wrote: > >> Hi folks, > >> > >> Chris described the CV joint as follows… > >> Don't worry about that groove. I ask because on the axles I removed from my 84 and am now repairing three CV joints have the groove facing in and one has it facing out. I’m wondering if that one was put on backwards. It has a good boot so I’d rather not mess with it. But if backwards I can deal with it now that I’m in the middle of this project. > >> >>>> > >> >>>> And Success. > >> >>>> > >> >>>> Thanks to the list and some local friends on the phone I successfully changed out a ripped boot and have an axle ready to go for my 84 if needed in the future. > >> >>>> > >> >>>> I’ll rehab the other axle now and then do the 85. > >> >>>> > >> >>>> Nice to have accomplished this task.
