All alone (or better with one companion, spouse), to out of the way places is the best kind of camping. I am getting to the point, however, where there may be too much risk. Bonnie cannot drive the van any more, and like you said, it is old. I don't have the mechanical skills of others. Years back, we'd just go, and if we had a breakdown (amazingly, we never did), we were prepared with our back packs. We'd get out eventually. We never gave a thought to no cell reception (what's a cell phone?). Now, we consider very carefully whether the road in is reasonably well maintained, we go over the van repeatedly for mechanical soundness, and despite our prediliction to be alone, we try to go to places where help might be available if need be. I've just gotten way more cautious. I envy you your ability to do the real back country thing that we no longer feel capable of. But we still go, and though we may choose a developed campground these days, it still is more often one without utilities, even including water. We just check with the rangers to find out if we might have help if need be.
