Hi all, There has been a winter season head gasket leak on one side of my '90 syncro westy for several years. (approx total 170K miles) so I am finally going to replace the head gaskets and heads . I last did this 20 years ago. I am presently reviewing my various files, Bentley and list member methods and wisdom to gear up to the task. I will be replacing the heads with new. One question I have is whether I need to use some sort of gasket sealant on the internal metal cylinder gaskets, I will use it on the green o ring seals. Even though the heads are new is it recommended to use something like Locktite 518? Dennis Haynes advised to use this on used heads, what about new ones? Also, for the final torque on the head nuts, is it 37 (Bentley) or 41 ft pounds? I'm also contemplating doing the oil pump, head studs and rods based on the high mileage, but haven't decided. I'm getting about 13 psi at idle for oil pressure and 45 at cruising speed (65mph). at about 100 celsius (212 F) oil temp. I'm sure I'll have more queries as this project progresses as I discover more deficiencies. I am beholden to the vast knowledge and generosity of the List! Rick Koller |
