Hey Eric

The post 1986 are 47mm & GoWesty says they will work on 1983 to 91

but the Pre 86 pipes are 6mm smaller so might be a bit loose ~ The Spring

style that VW chose to use are actually the best to use when a rubber hose

is clamped to a metal fitting & a lot of Heating & Cooling is happening,,, If

a rigid clamp is used in those conditions the hose gets crushed over time &

then the clamp becomes loose ~

If You want to use ScrewClamps I recommend Breeze Hose Clamps

& I would use “9228H" which have a range of 33 to 57mm
