So you are saying that all you need do is remove the panel, remove what's left of the old handle from the door, install new handle and cut a hole in the door panel for the handle to stick through? So anyone, with a rear handle, could remove their door panel and install a rear handle in the preexisting spot in the door?
That would make it easy.

Posting to the list as I am sure others would like to know this.

Drats!
I just had a sighted friend look at the spot where the rear handle should attach. He laughed and said it is still there. I said, what do you mean. He said, the part is there but someone cut off the square part that sticks out!
Yes, they cut off my rear handle holder. They could have just unscrewed it, or drilled a hole for it to come out of the door replacement panel. Ugh!
I’m more determined then ever to get a replacement part and put the handle back on.
I’m surprised no one sells this as the replacement interior door handles are available. These could be sold as a nice simple to install mod. Could even come with a piece of paper with the pattern to show where to drill the two holes

I know what you mean Eric. I really miss that rear slider handle also. I had one on one of my Westies and think it was quite handy. VW would have done us all a favor if they had left it in place.

Hi folks,
If you have a early vanagon with the extra interior slider handle, I need your info.
My 84 only has the one handle. I’d love to add the second interior handle. But, feeling around I can’t find a place to bolt it in.
My 84 has a replacement slider door panel. On the back are tactile places to drill out for the door clip. They all match up. And, I think there is one for the handle. But I don’t feel anything on the 84 for a bold to go in. Not even a hole. What is there is a sort of plastic feeling rectangle with a screw on either side. The screws don’t want to turn out something inside just spins.
So, what is the usual way the extra handle attaches? I have an extra handle and just want to bolt it on if possible.
Any tips are greatly appreciated.
