Good questions. Tree was on city property, next to an old folks home where people are forced to park on the street for lack of parking on said property. Tree trimming has long been neglected and the trees are becoming a threat. I learned the hard way. park there - there is no other place - and you are at risk. Ins. never discussed total loss. From the outside - except when looking down at the top - it does not look like it was even damaged. On that score I have to give kudos to the Germans of the time. It was hell for stout. When it gets down to it, I think my biggest issue is going to be who picks up the tab for getting it to and from a shop with the capacity and materials to do the job. The nearest one I have found is 600 miles away.

Given that the top has to be cut away anyway, for a new top to be put in, I have wondered about the effeciency of just installing a Westfalia type top and just having a Weekender. All that ceiling and AC tunneling stuff then could be eliminated. Since work has to be done, there should be some tradeoffs somewhere I would think.

And about the engine, this van was to be my last vehicle in my driving life. Since 1987 the vans have been my only vehicle. I have owned 5 over time and had four at once. The engine in this one is practically new - 3500 miles since major overhaul in a highly respected engine shop here - and it will outlast me by a long shot, and hopefully with minimum servicing, few problems.

Dennis, I'll try and send a few pics to you direct. I don't think they will go through Gerry so everyone can see what all the fuss is about.
