It has been a long time....but I believe Original Speaker grilles just unscrew.  And yes, there are plenty of good sounding speakers to replace the shoddy ones.  I did this 30 years ago.  At the time, I also added some bigger speakers down below on the door panel, above the metal.  I am very pleased with the result, I just wired them in parallel.  I discourage trying to retrofit new speakers and grilles into old spot; always issues with window cranks and clearances...and sure, I am aware of the GoWesty cranks. I did something like this many years ago and I believe the standard grilles screwed off?  I know I had to hack things up a little to make them sort of fit new speakers.  I can take a look if I have my doors apart again any time soon.
