Another issue to consider:  Water Intrusion.  I solved this problem by going to 99 Cent store.  I bought me some Instant Noodle thing; I didn't want the noodles, I only wanted the plastic bowl they come in.  Perfect fit!  Perfect protection.  Vanagon doors (actually all cars) are designed to allow water from window scrapers inside, and then gently flow out of some drainage holes on bottom.  That is why that flimsy plastic sheet (Vapor Barrier) is so essential.

It has been a long time....but I believe Original Speaker grilles just unscrew.  And yes, there are plenty of good sounding speakers to replace the shoddy ones.  I did this 30 years ago.  At the time, I also added some bigger speakers down below on the door panel, above the metal.  I am very pleased with the result, I just wired them in parallel.  I discourage trying to retrofit new speakers and grilles into old spot; always issues with window cranks and clearances...and sure, I am aware of the GoWesty cranks.

 Hi Eric,

I did something like this many years ago and I believe the standard
grilles screwed off?  I know I had to hack things up a little to make
them sort of fit new speakers.  I can take a look if I have my doors
apart again any time soon.
