And speaking of staying awake, one trick that I learned from RAAM (Race Across AMerica) riders (it's a long distance bicycle race, for those who don't know) is to rub an ice cube over the outside of one's eyelids, preferably with them closed :-) I would hope that most of us opt to pull over before doing damage to self and others, though.
