Subject: Synchros

I'm looking for a Synchro camper, and am wondering if all of them are waterboxers, or are some aircooled? And what year did VW solve the headgasket problem? BTW, I had two Subarus with similar problems, they had wet sleeves which had shims under them. Too thick a shim, the head gasket leaked water out onto the ground. Too thin a shim, the gasket would leak water into the cylinder and/or compression into the coolant. Major bummer! I had to buy an expensive dial-indicator gauge just to set those shims right.
