A laptop would be last choice -- too expensive, can't put my sound card and synergyzer card in it, etc. No, I want a regular 386 motherboard, hardrive, keyboard, modem, etc., but don't think there's really room for a regular monitor. I might use one of the lunchbox style cases, but really that's bulky too.

There is a setup like that, it's made for mechanics essentially, and was reviewed in "Byte" awhile back. Software and A/D interfaces supposed to hook up to most cars. Don't recall if that included VWs, but it was about $500-600. If I had the spare change it'd be worth it, I guess, but I don't. 8-)
