I was raised on grits (not too surprising, since my mother's family is
from backwoods Florida) and am also willing to rush to their defence, but
I must tale a short tale.

One of my uncles married a Kansas girl.  The first morning of her first
visit to Florida she was asked if she'd like grits for breakfast.  She
said she'd be willing to try one.

I guess you had to be there....
