I got the same price story you did and not having the bux, cut the ends off the rusty old one and bolted the ends back on with a bit of aluminum can sandwitched between. This had served me well for 60K+ miles and 2 emissions inspections. No one has noticed its non-presence yet. Never did learn the non-brute force way to turn the lights off. BTW, (non-CA) '78s didn't have an oxy sensor on the engine. Don't know about CA cars.
