On my 77 Rabbit, the EGR light was controlled by a box that the speedo/odo cable went through. There was a white plastic button on one side of the box. You pressed this in a good 2 cm using a pencil or pen or somesuch and it reset the box. Maybe the one on the bread-loaf is similar?
