this may not really help, but when the water pump went out on my 78 Scirocco (btw, it was the original pump!), it just made a funny noise. There were no cooling problems.

Joachim 78 Scirocco 88 Fox 90 Vanagon one of these days I might actually be driving a new model...naaah -- I'm not an engineer, but I play one at work.
