If getting sprayed while filling up, maybe the simplest solution, particularly 
if you can't tell when to ease off on the pump because of background noise, etc.
is to flip the little lever on the pump handle (where available) so it will pump
automatically and shut off when full.  Then get the hell out of the way and let 
her blow! :)
