LandRover tried this in the 60's, with a long wheelbase model. Like the current posting, it had a cog in place of the road wheel, with two little road wheels inside the track belt. Made for a little triangular track in place each the road wheel. Installation was the same as changing a tire! Never made it into production however. tim s.
