You can check the wheel bearings, but I'd really suspect the CV joints,
especially since you get a knocking sound. My guess is that they're compatable
with your '81, but Im not sure. If they are, you can just swap the whole axles
out.
As far as replacing wheel bearing seals, I use either a large socket that's the
right size, or I cut a piece of wood to use as a drift.
