Subject: Backfire thru intake ?

I have a 81 Vanagon, 2L, FI, Cal. model with good compression, but it just starts for a few short seconds and then dies. I have NOT yet checked the timing, etc. It appears to get backfire through the intake. Since we pulled the engine, a friend says I should remove the heads to check for burnt valves just in case. Ideas anyone?
